Comparison Of Traditional Braces And Aligners – Patient Satisfaction And Treatment Efficacy
Abstract
Background: Orthodontic treatment aims to improve dental alignment, function, and aesthetics. Traditional metal braces and clear aligners are the two most commonly used treatment modalities, each offering distinct advantages and limitations. This study compared patient satisfaction and treatment efficacy between traditional metal braces and clear aligners. Aim: To evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy, treatment experience, and patient satisfaction associated with traditional metal braces and clear aligners in orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: A survey-based comparative study was conducted among 200 patients who had undergone orthodontic treatment. Participants were divided into two groups: Group A (traditional metal braces, n=100) and Group B (clear aligners, n=100). Data were collected using a structured questionnaire consisting of nine questions distributed through Google Forms. Parameters assessed included awareness of treatment options, reasons for treatment choice, cost-effectiveness, oral hygiene maintenance, pain perception, treatment duration, and overall satisfaction. Results: Traditional metal braces were preferred primarily because of their affordability, with 81% of participants citing cost as the major factor. Clear aligners were chosen mainly for their aesthetic appearance, removability, and comfort. Approximately 84% of aligner users reported better oral hygiene maintenance compared to brace wearers. Pain and gum discomfort were reported by 81.8% of patients treated with braces, whereas 69% of aligner patients experienced little or no gum pain. Braces demonstrated superior effectiveness in managing complex orthodontic cases, while aligners offered greater comfort, improved quality of life, and enhanced patient satisfaction. Treatment duration exceeding 12 months was more commonly associated with traditional braces. Conclusion: Both traditional metal braces and clear aligners are effective orthodontic treatment options. Traditional braces remain the preferred choice for complex malocclusions due to their superior control of tooth movement and cost-effectiveness. In contrast, clear aligners provide better aesthetics, oral hygiene, comfort, and overall patient satisfaction. Treatment selection should be individualized based on clinical requirements, patient preferences, compliance, and economic considerations.
